What is BMI ?

Body Mass Index (BMI) is just a number for benchmarking & it is calculated using a person’s weight and height. BMI provides a reliable indicator of body fatness and is used to categorise whether people have healthy weight or they are overweight or obese or underweight.

Excess body fat is linked to an increased risk of some diseases including heart disease and some cancers. Doctors and other healthcare professionals use BMI to determine whether a person is overweight or clinically obese.

Adults and BMI
Your BMI is calculated by dividing your weight in kilograms by your height in metres squared. The result you get is then classified into the following groups

A BMI of 18.5-24.9 is considered healthy.
If you have a BMI of more than 25 to 29.9 you are overweight.
BMI over 30 is an indicator of obesity.
Over 40 is morbidly obese.

Example how to calculate your BMI:
a). Lets say your weight is 62.5 kg and height is 1.67 meters.
b). Divide your weight (for example 62.5 kg) by 1.67×1.67= 2.78
c). 62.5 ÷ 2.78= 22.48
So your BMI is 22.48.

FAST WEIGHT LOSS

I get lots of email from people who want fast weight loss. Is it possible? Can it be done?  Some people say “Hi, I have a wedding to go to in 2 weeks and I need to lose around 20 pounds fast, what can I do?” or “Summer is coming up next week and I need to lose 10 pound, What should I do?” but is fast weight loss really possible? Is there a diet and/or workout you can do.

Let me clarify loosing weight will depend upon number of factors.

The right amount of weight that the average person should hope and try to lose a week when eating and doing exercise correctly is something between one to three pounds (max) a week.

Ideally weight loss two pounds a week is healthy, safe, smart, effective amount to lose. Losing more weight than 3 pounds a week may not be healthy in my opinion.

However before starting any weight loss schedule, it is always good to take qualified doctor or dietitian advice.
