India Government moves to protect its yoga traditions

New Delhi - The Indian health ministry is documenting 1 500 yoga asanas (postures) in an effort to counter
instructors abroad from claiming patents on the ancient art. The documentation will be part of the ministry's Digital
Traditional Knowledge Library along with formulas in traditional medicine.

Yoga is an ancient system of exercise, practised in Hinduism, aimed at attaining physical, mental and spiritual
wellbeing. The library will have information in five languages - English, Spanish, French, Japanese and German, a
government official said.

"The library will protect India's traditional knowledge base," said Ambumani Ramadoss, Indian health minister.

"Countries which sign an agreement with India will have access to the database. This will prevent Indians living
abroad from claiming patents for existing formulations," added an official.

He said the health ministry had received reports of self-proclaimed yoga teachers in the West trying to patent
traditional yoga asanas and ayurvedic medicinal formulations.

"They try to name the asana after themselves by getting a patent. We will stop this," said the official.

India to boost "village tourism" to attract foreign tourists

India has decided to boost the emerging 'village tourism' industry to meet the demand of North American tourists
who want to have a first hand experience of the country's spiritual and cultural heritage.

"The government has already identified 56 villages that give glimpses of 'Incredible India'," S.K. Misra, Secretary in
the Ministry of Tourism said. He said this while inaugurating the road show 'India as a preferred Tourist
destination' organised by the Ministry of Tourism. Top executives of Canadian airlines, tour operators and
companies attended the show.

Mr SK Misra said India ranked fifth among the world's tourism hotspots after New Zealand; Thailand, Australia and
Italy. Overseas travellers from across the globe have put India in the top five lists of most attractive and satisfying
holiday destinations in the world.     He said an action plan has been formulated to double the Canadian tourists
traffic to India within next two years. The government's goal was to attract 200,000 Canadian tourists every year
within two years against 77000 now, Misra said.

According to Mr Rajeev Talwar, who is Additional Direction General of Indian Tourism, said that there was demand
for Indian spiritual knowledge,
yoga, ayurveda and cultural heritage in the west.

Moving away from culture of blame
SRI SRI RAVI SHANKAR, SPIRITUAL TEACHER

A Frenchman is proud of being French or speaking French, but here in India for a Kannadiga, Telugu,
Maharashtrian or Tamilian, pride depends on how well versed he or she is in English or any other foreign
language. Their pride is in eating pizzas, owning branded jeans and shoes, and the foreign trips they make.

The ancient Indian knowledge of yoga is a rage all over the world. In the US alone, yoga is a $27-billion industry.
We need to revive and take pride in the profound and vast knowledge of yoga and meditation practices.

From Kashmir to Kanyakumari, India is bestowed with a rich lore of spiritual literature and philosophy, be it the
Kashmir Shaivism of Vigyan Bhairav, Shiv Sutras, Ras Hriday Tantras or the Tamil scriptures such as Thirukural.

There are, in fact, several thousands of manuscripts and palm leaf scripts which have not even been decoded yet.
Thanks to the endeavour of University of Tubingen and Hamburg in Germany, many rare and old manuscripts are
being preserved and digitalised.

Ayurveda has the potential to make India a leader in holistic healthcare. The largest variety of flora and fauna are
available here. With Ayurveda becoming increasingly popular, India needs to measure up to global competition
and use its inherent strengths before it's too late.

As the proverbial saying goes, India is sitting on a huge pile of wealth, not knowing its worth. The real
empowerment will happen when people of India realise that they have the power to change.
