| What Is a Lap-Band Surgery "Lap-Band System" is the brand name of adjustable gastric band used in the procedure. Most simply, a Lap-Band is a silicone belt that goes around the top of the stomach. Acording to advertiement this helps in to controlling the hunger and you eat much less and should feel full sooner. A key component of the Lap-Band System is its adjustability. The band is connected to a port, which enables the device to be inflated over time to expedite the weight loss. It is claimed that following surgery, one can return to work within a week, with less discomfort. One need to follow a nutrition plan (which may include vitamin supplements) prescribed by your surgeon and/or nutritionist ( Now the interesting point to note is if you can follow nutririon plan of your own you donot need any weight loss surgery). The nutrition plan will likely include a liquid diet for a few weeks, until you can tolerate soft foods, and later solid foods. A specific exercise program, is also be recommended ( again I would highlight the fact that you are supposed to follow exercise plan, however if you follow even mild exercise plan you can loose the weight of your own). You need to make regular visits to surgeon which are normally mandatory to adjust the band. Your surgeon or his assistant will be able to inject the port in the office. On average, patients require six to eight adjustments of the band during the first 18 months following Lap-Band surgery. Generally patients lose 50% to 60% of their excess body weight within two years after the procedure. (Again I would say you can loose the same or even more weight naturally and in healthy way if you follow simple nutrition plan and mild exercise plan). See the point is you are not getting away from following nutrition and exercise. Doctors are making it mandatory for you to follow exercise and nutrition plan so why not follow it first and loose weight naturally. Complication during lap band surgery There can be many complication during surgery. following are some of them. Slippage of the band can occur as you lose weight and the stomach goes above the band, causing heartburn or vomiting. The band can spontaneously deflate because of leakage. That leakage can come from the band, the reservoir, or the tubing that connects them. The stomach pouch can enlarge. The stoma (stomach outlet) can be blocked etc. |
